Does anybody have any lens advice?

Question by Leah: Does anybody have any lens advice?
Hey, I’m looking to buy a new lens and would like some recommendations/advice. I’m currently using my slightly ancient, but amazing to me Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT. I’m looking to upgrade to something a bit nicer than the lens it came with (which is horrible, by the way). I’m just a recreational photographer and use my camera mostly for sports pictures so I would like a lens that does good with that and also can get good close ups. I’m looking for something not real expensive, let’s say under 0 (I am willing to buy used for sure!). So what is the best lens in that price that would fit my needs? Any suggestions and advice would be highly appreciated (I’ll just be clear now that I have no intention on buying a whole new camera body, only a lens). Thanks!
I’m not getting horrible pictures with the lens I have now, I just don’t like how you can’t zoom in real far. I’ve tried other lenses way out of my price range that a friend of mine owns and the pictures are so much better quality. I guess I have exaggerating when I said the lens is horrible, I just don’t like it and it’s a bit limiting.
Oh and I should probably add that I’m not looking to sell my photos or anything. They are just for myself and my family and my entertainment. :)

I don’t know how close you’re going to be, but an18-200 zoom would probably do what you’re looking for. I don’t know what length is available for Canon, but something in the range of what I mentioned.

I was just wondering if this picture is edited. The lighting on it and overall-ness just seems a bit much for a camera. Though it’s probably possible.

If anyone can elaborate on this? Maybe, possibly, tell me why they believe it is, or isn’t edited?

Well, I was thinking it was edited because the way it looks. It seems to be enhanced, yet dimmed. For a nice effect.
Like when people make movies, they will master and edit the movie, and it’ll give it that darker, yet more enhanced look to scenes.

Just seems to me like taking that picture normally wouldn’t have that effect on it. Not about the splashing – that’s fine. I’m talking about over all effect – lighting and everything.
